Business Unusual....

“IT’S BUSINESS UNUSUAL” by Olaniyi Soremekun

Every New Year brings diverse expectations.  With every New Year comes fresh hopes and this year is no different.  As we go into the year, we should know and appreciate that uncommon success will come only from uncommon pursuit of common laws.  Success, which is the attainment of God’s purpose and intent for your life, requires certain strategies that appear so simple but profound.  Some of these strategies can be observed in one of God’s creatures; the peacock.

The peacock is known to be a very beautiful animal.  This bird of incredible beauty is also full of pride.  However, aside appreciating its beauty and pride, the peacock has gone from pursuit to been sought after.  This wonderful creature attained the status of being sought after by deploying certain unusual strategies which we should learn from to achieve success in our endeavours.

What are these strategies which makes the peacock so irresistible and indispensable?

1)   Incredible: Dare to be different.  Stretch your mind.  Dream big because that is what God wants; remember God gives small things to small-minded people.  Pursue excellence relentlessly.  Be amazing.  Do not stand in the crowd, stand out.

2)   Irreplaceable:  No one should things the way you do.  Be one-of-a-kind.  Build a reputation of expertise in your specialized area.  Never lose your hunger to find a need and play your role to fill it.

3)   Impressive:  For you to be impressive, you have to be impressed too.  People must enjoy doing business with you.  How? What must you offer?  Relationships.  A cordial, symbiotic relationship opens the vault of your customer’s heart.  People pay more for solutions and relationships.

4)   Innovate:  Find new ways of offering old products and services.  You must be seen as a solution provider.

5)   Investment:  Be a consultant not a contractor.  Do not put price ahead of value assessment and proposition.  Make impact in a responsible and sustainable way.  Learn that “income comes behind impact”.  Make positive impact on everyone you meet and everywhere you go.

The factors are critical in the drive for excellence.  Always remember, ”Excellence has the reward of wealth”.  You shall succeed.

Tailors And Politicians. What Do They Have In Common?

I have thought about this long and hard and I have to say my tailors remind me of our Politicians. They promise you heaven on earth, setting outrageous targets and deadlines and at the end of the day all you'll get are excuses and apologies.

I have tried so many tailors and they are all the same. If you are a tailor or fashion designer out there please don't take this the wrong way. I just feel it's high time I say exactly how I feel.

I bought this Woodin Ankara for my friend's wedding. The wedding is in December (thank goodness) and I dropped it off at my tailors 6 weeks ago. After terrible experiences I thought the smart thing to do was to tell the tailor that the date of my event was this Saturday. Thinking that will speed up the process.

When I took the material to Martin (my tailor), he came up with a number of great styles for it. I went there with lots of nice pictures from all these fashion magazines but he's always very creative. So he managed to sketch a perfect dress for me. Adding bits and pieces from the styles I had in mind and suggesting things I dint even think were possible. I left his shop really pleased. I had found my next facebook profile picture. I just had to make my hair for the wedding and with that dress; it'll be hard to keep people's eyes off me.

I got to Martin's shop today and the place was filled with pieces of my material and no gown in sight. The following conversation ensued.

Martin: Aunty you are here?

Me: You asked me to come today, the wedding is this Saturday.

Martin (smiling): Are you sure? I know that customers like to say that so I can finish their clothes quick quick

Me: Ah ah, so am now a liar? Anyway, where is the gown? I didn't think so much material will be left over I said looking round the shop

Martin: Aunty, e never ready oh

Me: What!!!

I tried to sound as angry as I could and Martin kept apologising telling me how his assistant feel ill and he's been working so late everyday just to meet deadlines (same excuses different day). With my ears full of apologies and promises, I left the shop. Martin assured me that my gown would be ready first thing Saturday morning? He even offered to bring it to my house if I wanted. I declined his offer. I wanted to tell him to take his time as I wanted the gown to be just as lovely as I'd imagined but how could I after all my party is 'This Saturday'. Guess all I can do is wait and see what happens!
